There are many different types of catering services as cuisines from other countries become more popular in the UK. Unlike many people think the ability to cook is only one factor of having a successful catering company you need to have excellent managerial skills and must be good at planning and timing as well as having good social skills. Here are some of the basic requirements you will need to possess before thinking about opening your own catering company:
- Customer service skills – It is highly important for you to have customer service skills as you will have to make your customers feel at ease when greeting them.
- Ability to keep calm – If at large events such as weddings something goes wrong in the planning or there is an accident then you need to be able to keep calm and solve the problem. If you were to get over whelmed by the situation then this would affect your staff also.
- Ability to motivate – This is important because if your staff are not motivated they won’t pay as much attention to their work, as well as motivation you need to ensure the staff know exactly what they are suppose to be doing at every point through out the event.
Entry in to such a profession will take time as there are so many skills you need to learn before starting your own company. You would start by taking courses in subjects such as hospitality and catering. If you are interested in the subject from a fairly young age then it is possible to take the different courses to an NVQ level and be taken on as trainee manager. This is also a good route for those that have little experience as it gives you training in the basics.
Another aspect of owning your own catering company that you will have to learn about are the safety regulations. There are courses you can go on to learn all of these things in detail, once you have learnt everything from these courses it is important for you to ensure all your staff are trained and know all the regulations of that kind of work place before they start working for you. In some areas of the country your staff may be required to go on a specific course to teach them the basics in courses such as health and safety.
Think carefully before starting your own catering company as it is a very competitive sector and if you don’t have the right knowledge, skills and staff then it could not work and mean you have wasted your money and time started the business.
