Indian cuisine is one of Britain’s and many other nations’ favourite foods. While meals from Indian takeaways sell in their abundance each year there is still a lot of traditional Indian cuisine that people are yet to discover and enjoy.
To help you learn more about what Indian cuisine has to offer we have provided information on some favourite Indian dishes.
Biryani
Biryani is a rice based dish which originates from the Indian Subcontinent. Similar to Italian risotto dishes a biryani can be made using a variety of different ingredients combined with rice to create numerous unique recipes. Traditional biryani is made using basmati rice, yoghurt, either meat or vegetables to provide the main flavour and spices to add extra depth.
India is a large continent with equally diverse culture. Following this trait different regions of India have their own twist on the original biryani dish. Some recipes are also compared to casseroles due to similar cooking methods used. Individual ingredients are cooked together and then combined and cooked to form the finished dish.
To help reduce preparation times some manufacturers create instant biryani mixes. Although not a purists method good results can be achieved.
Chicken Tikka Masala
Chicken tikka masala is a chicken tikka dish served in masala gravy. Unlike other traditional dishes there is not a defined recipe for chicken tikka masala. The gravy is usually made with tomato, cream or coconut milk and a blend of spices.
Chicken tikka masala is a dish which causes much discussion in the Indian catering industry. The origins of the dish are often debated. Some claim it is a product of British occupancy in the British India region. This is as British troops in the area needed a more accessible version of the traditional cuisine being offered. Many see it as an adaptation of Murgh Makhni, a traditional Punjabi dish.
Chicken tikka masala is regarded as one of the most popular dishes from South Asia. This is apparent as it is available in many restaurants worldwide. Throughout India it is increasing in popularity and remains a firm favourite in the Subcontinent.
Jalebi
Jalebi is a popular dessert which represents the diversity of Indian cuisine. Jalebi originates from Iran and is widely available throughout India. As jalebi can be served warm or cold it is a popular choice for a snack at any time of the day.
Jalebi is made from batter infused with syrup that is fried and shaped into large twisted pieces. Jalebi has a chewy and crunchy texture due to the springiness of the batter and the crunch of the glazed sugar. The sugar is sometimes fermented to allow the flavour to further develop.
Jalebi is traditionally a vibrant orange colour. Depending on the preparation methods and ingredients used it can appear in other colours. Jalebi is served as a dessert in some Indian restaurants and is a staple delicacy from traditional sweet shops.
